Duke of Bedford Cottages - West Bridge/Fitzford
The opening of the Devon Consuls mine in 1844 brought a flood of miners and their families to Tavistock. The population rose from 3,420 in c. 1841 to 8,965 in 1861. Tavistock was a Victorian 'boom' town.
Between 1845 and 1866 similar 'model' two up two down cottages were built in Parkwood Road and outside Tavistock at Morewellham and Wheal Maria.
How much did each cottage cost to build? What might you be able to use authentic details like this for when writing historical fiction?
